Cold-weather nitrification · UltraClear® Nitrifying Concentrate

Keep nitrifying when the basin gets cold.

Nitrifier growth drops as temperatures fall, and many plants lose nitrification until spring. A maintenance dose of live Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter helps carry you through. Get a free winter dosing plan and price, with a reply within 1 business day.

Proof from an upset recovery: A food processor cut effluent ammonia from about 10 to 0.05 mg/L in days, with no permit violations. See the case

02A winter program

Hold the population before the cold takes it.

Nitrification is highly temperature-dependent. Supplementing the basin keeps enough working nitrifiers in place to offset their slower rate.

Start before it gets cold

A maintenance dose through the cold months helps hold the population you need while growth slows.

Dose where the oxygen is

Aeration basins, oxidation ditches or the influent of RBCs, at the lowest-flow time of day. Avoid anaerobic zones and primary clarifiers.

Stretch each shipment

The Propagation Kit grows the culture on site to extend treatment capacity between deliveries.

03Case studyFood processing facility · Effluent ammonia (TAN) compliance

How a food processor recovered from a nitrification failure in days.

The problem

Nitrification suddenly failed and effluent ammonia climbed to about 10 mg/L. The root cause was still unknown.

What they did

They dosed two totes of UltraClear Nitrifying Concentrate already on site, then used the Propagation Kit to carry the biomass until the next shipment arrived.

The result

Effluent ammonia fell from about 10 mg/L to 0.05 mg/L, a drop of about 99.5%.

It worked out really well to help us recover so much quicker… It was good to have these nitrifiers here to start recovery way, way quicker… This has been a really good find for us.”

04FAQ

Questions operators ask before winter.

Why does nitrification fail in winter?
Nitrifiers are slow-growing and sensitive to cold. As basins cool, their growth rate drops until they can be washed out faster than they multiply, and effluent ammonia climbs.
When should I start dosing?
As winter approaches, before you lose nitrification, then through the cold months. We will set the timing in your plan.
How fast does it start working?
It is a live culture, not a dormant powder, so it begins driving ammonia oxidation within hours of dosing.
How do I store it in winter?
Store it between 50°F and 95°F and agitate before use.
How much will I need?
It depends on flow, influent ammonia load and HRT. Send the short form and we will size a winter program and price for your plant.
